Default Simple Breathing Meditation

1. Choose a quiet place to meditate.

2. Sit in a comfortable position. The traditional cross-legged posture is fine but not necessary, and you can even sit in a chair.

3. Keep your back straight.

4. Sit with your eyes partially closed and direct your attention to your breathing.

5. Breathe naturally, preferably through the nostrils, without attempting to control your breath.

6. Try to become aware of the sensation of breathe as it enters and leaves the nostrils. This sensation is your object of meditation. Concentrate on it to the exclusion of everything else.

7. Resist the temptation to follow meandering thoughts and focus on the sensation of your breath. If your mind wanders, immediately return your focus onto your breath.

I started doing this myself when I was 5 years old. I remember I was upset over something and just started focusing on my breathing and it made me feel better.

As I got older I added counting. When I'm really upset I'll sit down, close my eyes and start counting. I know that when I reach 500 I'll be better. Even when I'm on low numbers like the teens I can feel myself relaxing and all the tension leaving.

I have no idea how as a 5 year old I was doing yoga without anyone telling me about it.

Maybe all of this is natural to humans and all we have to do is realize that we have the power to make ourselves feel better.

I love this- This is so simple and can be done right at work. I have a desk job (accountant) and believe me my days are super stressful. I have at many times found myself doing just this. I didn't know it even had a name.
I will sit there - kick off my shoes- shut my door - and breathe. I always feel so relaxed. In through the nose- out through the mouth and I pay attention.

It is a great way to reduce stress and calm your body and mind.

I do practice this to calm myself. I find that when frustrated and the breaths are coming a mile a minute I can thoroughly distract myself from my frustration by focusing on deep slow calming breaths.

When using this just as a meditative method is it best to do so in a dark place or would that make much difference?
