Default 'Green' Your Baby

Nothing motivates one quite so much as being responsible for a new being. Having a baby is the moment when many people move from one end of the green spectrum to the other. It's no longer just what you put into and on your body that counts. Now it's a little life that's being affected by your actions. In other words, it's a big deal!

Tips to 'Green' your baby.

1. Choose organic cotton or wool fabrics made without toxic chemicals, or buy second-hand or share clothing with other mothers who have older or younger children.

2. Use olive oil as a natural substitute for petroleum-based lotions.

3. You can clean your baby's bottom with water, cotton wool, and use alternative remedies such as chamomile tea (or any other natural fragrance-free product) for diaper rash days.

4. Use cloth diapers made from eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, hemp, and bamboo.

5. Use natural and organic washing powders and softeners.

6. Find natural and organic alternatives to household detergents.

7. Grow your own vegetables, and beat the organic food bill. Organic food contains no chemicals, no pesticides, and is not genetically modified.

8. Buy wooden toys and soft cuddly toys made from organic materials.

9. Buy second-hand, durable furniture for your baby's room. There is less chance of the use of toxic materials, and it's greener for the environment.

I found it interesting that the above article stated that olive oil was a better natural alternative than baby lotion. I'd never heard that one before. Does anyone else know of any other natural alternatives?

This may seem odd and a bit off topic but we used this on our cats at the animal rescue for minor skin disorders (dry flaky skin) and we also rubbed it on orphan kittens to promote "preening" from other cats to help the kittens thrive.
