Default Benefits of Using Cloth Diapers

Did you know that it is estimated that 10,000 tons of disposable diapers are tossed into landfills each day and that they can take up to 500 years to decompose? Due to the environmental impact of disposable diapers and the fact that they are laden with chemicals which have been associated with many health problems, many parents are opting for cloth diapers. Cloth diapers offer many benefits. Here are a few:

1. Cloth diapers are reusable (and can even be used for other children).

2. Cloth diapers are recyclable (often used as cotton rags after baby is potty trained).

3. Cloth diapers are less expensive. It is estimated that using cloth vs. disposable diapers over a 2 1/2 year period (and 6,000 diaper changes) saves approximately $800-$1600.

4. Cloth diapers decrease the instances of diaper rash vs. disposable diapers which have poor air flow, and the fact that babies spend longer periods in disposable diapers due to feeling dry when they are actually wet.

Do or did you use cloth diapers with your baby? What are/were your experiences?

I used disposable diapers with my babies. However, my Mom used cloth diapers on me and my sisters. She says that children are being potty trained later now due to disposable diapers. When we were babies, we knew we were wet when wearing cloth diapers. It would even run down our legs. We knew we were wet and we wanted to get it off. Now, with disposable diapers, the wetness is kept away from babies, making them less uncomfortable. Thus, the awareness of being wet is harder to detect. But cloth diapers have come a long way since then. A friend of mine uses cloth diapers on her baby. She has these nice little rubber liners that she puts on the outside of the diaper and that helps to prevent leaks. It is almost like using disposable diapers but totally washable and reusable.

I dont buy diapers because my baby has some kind of alergy. She doesnt like it. So we use soft and many-time-used cloth.

If I had it to do all over again, this is one of the things I would "change"...no pun intended. I would do cloth instead of disposeables and they are so cute now. Not the big bulky reusables like they used to be.

As far as the landfills, yes, it takes everything so long to break down. They've found newspapers that are over 40 years old and still readable. Everything is packed down too tight...no air can get to anything and its impossible to mix it all. Lettuce doesn't even break down.
